A Christmas Letter To My Dad
2017
Video Collage
A Christmas Letter to My Dad is a video collage created as a virtual, unsent letter to my father. Using footage filmed during my first Christmas holidays with friends in Berlin, the work reflects on the growing distance between my life in Berlin and that of my family in Tehran. The exchange rate between the two countries’ currencies becomes its central parameter: every euro spent during the holiday is converted into toman, as if to convey the gap in another language—and to speak about my life through the familiar terms of money, inflation, and politics, a language we were used to, in contrast to speaking about emotions.

Video Collage
A video collage created during a one-week residency at Kinophilia Linz. The work brings together archival footage from the last days of my life in Tehran, when I was waiting for a long-overdue visa: ordinary fragments of being stuck in traffic, evenings at house parties, and moments of daily life. Superimposed on these images are correspondences with various authorities—visa offices, university administration, housing agencies—forming a portrait of transition suspended between bureaucracy and lived experience.
